Wellesley Island State Park
Sitting at the heart of the Thousand Islands region, Wellesley Island State Park spreads across 2,636 acres of forested terrain surrounded by the St. Lawrence River. Established in 1951, the park occupies a large portion of Wellesley Island, offering a distinctive blend of river access, woodland trails, and wildlife habitat that sets it apart from typical state parks.
The Minna Anthony Common Nature Center anchors the park’s appeal, featuring over 600 acres of preserved land with eight miles of interpretive trails winding through meadows, marshes, and old-growth forest. Inside the center, natural history exhibits and live animal displays give visitors context for what they’ll encounter outside. Birdwatchers come specifically for the diverse species drawn to the island’s mix of riverfront and interior habitats.
Hikers and cross-country skiers share a well-maintained trail network that traces the island’s rocky shoreline and cuts through dense stands of birch and pine. Boaters launch directly into the St. Lawrence, where the surrounding archipelago of granite islands makes for exceptional paddling and fishing. Smallmouth bass and northern pike draw anglers throughout the warm months.
The park operates a large campground with sites suited for tents and RVs, many positioned with river views. A swimming beach on the St. Lawrence provides relief during July and August heat.
Visit between late May and early October for the fullest experience. Fall foliage season in late September transforms the island into a corridor of color against the deep blue river.
