Dewolf Point State Park
New York (Thousand Islands County)
Tucked among the granite-edged shores of the St. Lawrence River, DeWolf Point State Park occupies a quiet 13 acres on Wellesley Island in New York’s Thousand Islands region. Established in 1898, it’s one of the oldest state parks in the system — and one of the most intimate, offering a slower pace than its larger neighbor, Wellesley Island State Park, just down the road.
The park sits on a small peninsula where the river narrows into channels dotted with tiny, tree-covered islands. This geography makes it a standout spot for kayaking and canoeing — paddle out from the shoreline and you’re immediately weaving between islands, watching herons lift off from rocky outcrops. Fishing is equally rewarding, with smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye patrolling the surrounding waters.
On land, short nature trails wind through mixed hardwood forest, and the park’s modest size means you’re never far from the water. Picnic areas with river views make it easy to spend a full afternoon without an agenda. Birders will find the Thousand Islands flyway productive, especially during spring and fall migration.
Summer — late June through August — is prime season, when the river warms enough for swimming and the islands are lush. September brings fewer crowds and spectacular foliage reflected in the calm water.
Because of its small footprint, DeWolf Point feels more like a well-kept secret than a destination park. If you’re exploring the Thousand Islands and want somewhere peaceful to launch a kayak or eat lunch with a view, this is it.
