Sandy Island Beach State Park

Tucked along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario in Central County, New York, Sandy Island Beach State Park offers 227 acres of freshwater dunes, wetlands, and one of the finest barrier beach systems in the northeastern United States. Established in 2006, the park preserves a rare coastal landscape where towering sand dunes give way to a broad, sandy beach stretching along the lake.

What makes Sandy Island Beach truly remarkable is its unspoiled dune ecology. Unlike heavily developed lakefront areas, this park protects fragile dune grass communities and interdunal wetlands that support rare plant species found in few other places in New York. A boardwalk threads through the dunes, keeping the habitat intact while giving visitors front-row access to the scenery.

Swimming in Lake Ontario is a major draw during summer months, with calm, shallow water that warms nicely by July. The beach itself is wide and uncrowded compared to ocean-side alternatives, making it a favorite for families. Birdwatching is excellent here year-round, as the wetland-dune transition zone attracts shorebirds, warblers, and raptors during migration seasons. Hiking the interconnected trails reveals shifting sand formations and pockets of pitch pine that feel almost coastal Southern in character.

The best time to visit is late June through early September, when water temperatures are comfortable and the dune wildflowers are in bloom. Spring and fall bring quieter trails and outstanding birding opportunities.
