Niagara Falls State Park
New York (Niagara County)
Niagara Falls State Park holds the distinction of being America’s oldest state park, established in 1885 to preserve public access to one of the world’s most powerful natural wonders. Spanning 221 acres along the Niagara River gorge in Niagara County, New York, the park puts you steps away from 750,000 gallons of water plunging over the falls every second.
The park’s crown jewel is the Cave of the Winds experience, where wooden walkways bring you within arm’s reach of Bridal Veil Falls — close enough to feel the thundering mist on your skin. The Maid of the Mist boat tour, departing from the base of the gorge, takes visitors directly into the spray at the foot of Horseshoe Falls. For drier perspectives, the Observation Tower extends out over the gorge and offers panoramic views of all three waterfalls.
Beyond the falls themselves, paved trails wind through Goat Island and the Three Sisters Islands, where the upper rapids churn through rocky channels. The park’s Discovery Center covers the region’s geology and hydroelectric history. Fishing is permitted along designated stretches of the river, and winter visitors are rewarded with dramatic ice formations along the gorge walls.
Peak season runs June through August, when extended daylight hours allow you to catch the nightly illumination of the falls. Spring and fall bring thinner crowds and equally impressive water volume. Winter visits offer a quieter, almost otherworldly experience as mist freezes into sculptural formations across the landscape.
