De Veaux Woods State Park
New York (Niagara County)
Tucked along the Niagara Gorge rim in Niagara County, De Veaux Woods State Park offers 51 acres of old-growth forest that feels worlds away from the tourist bustle of nearby Niagara Falls. Established in 2001 on the grounds of a former boys’ school, the park preserves one of western New York’s last stands of mature hardwoods — towering oaks, maples, and tulip trees that have grown undisturbed for well over a century.
The park’s defining feature is its canopy. Walking beneath these massive trees, many exceeding 100 feet, creates a cathedral-like atmosphere rare in the region. A network of easy trails winds through the woods and connects to the Niagara Gorge Trail system, offering dramatic views of the gorge and whitewater rapids below. Birdwatchers will find the old-growth habitat productive, particularly during spring and fall migration when warblers move through the canopy.
Picnic areas with shelters make this an excellent spot for a quiet afternoon outdoors, and the flat, accessible terrain suits visitors of all fitness levels. The park is a popular destination for nature photography, especially in autumn when the mature hardwood canopy turns vivid shades of gold and crimson.
The best time to visit is May through October, with peak fall color typically arriving in mid-October. Winter visits reward with stark beauty and solitude. Note that this is a day-use park — plan accommodations elsewhere if you’re staying overnight in the Niagara region.
