The park’s centerpiece is the Devil’s Hole cave formation — a natural rock shelter carved into the gorge wall that once served as a dwelling for the Seneca Nation. A steep staircase descends roughly 300 steps from the gorge rim down to the Niagara River’s edge, where the whirlpool rapids churn with raw power just feet away. It’s one of the most visceral encounters with the Niagara River you can have without getting wet.

Hiking is the main draw here. The Niagara Gorge Rim Trail connects Devil’s Hole to neighboring Whirlpool State Park, offering roughly 4 miles of gorge-edge walking with unobstructed views of the rapids below. Fishing along the lower river attracts anglers targeting steelhead, salmon, and smallmouth bass, particularly during fall runs.
