Perched on the bluffs above the Niagara River Gorge in Lewiston, New York, Earl W. Brydges Artpark State Park is the only state park in the country dedicated to the visual and performing arts. Established in 1974, this 197-acre park blends natural beauty with a vibrant cultural calendar that draws visitors from across western New York and southern Ontario.

The park’s centerpiece is its outdoor amphitheater, which hosts a summer-long lineup of concerts, theater productions, and dance performances — many of them free. On any given evening from June through August, you might catch a Broadway touring company, a major-label musician, or a local theater troupe performing against a backdrop of river gorge sunsets. Beyond the stage, art installations and sculpture trails weave through the wooded grounds, and visiting artists frequently lead hands-on workshops open to the public.

For those drawn more to trails than theaters, Artpark delivers there too. Hiking paths descend through old-growth forest to the Niagara River shoreline, offering dramatic gorge views and excellent birdwatching, particularly during spring and fall raptor migrations. Fishing along the lower Niagara is a local favorite, with steelhead and salmon runs drawing anglers year-round.

The park does not offer camping facilities, so plan on day visits. The best time to come is mid-June through August, when the full arts season is running and the gorge trails are at their most lush. Admission to the grounds is free, though ticketed performances vary in price.
