Lock 32 State Canal Park
Tucked along the historic Erie Canal in Genesee County, Lock 32 State Canal Park preserves one of the original lock structures from the canal’s expansion era. At just 9 acres, this compact park punches above its weight as a living history lesson and a quiet retreat from the busier parks in western New York.
Established in 1978, the park centers on the restored remains of Lock 32, one of the engineering marvels that helped transform New York State’s economy in the 19th century. Interpretive signs walk you through how the lock system worked, making it an excellent stop for history buffs and curious families alike. The canal towpath trail connects to a longer network, offering easy walking and cycling along the waterway — flat terrain that works well for all ages and fitness levels.
Fishing along the canal is a popular draw, with panfish and bass commonly caught from the banks. Picnic areas with tables make it easy to settle in for a lazy afternoon. Birdwatchers will find the canal corridor surprisingly productive, especially during spring and fall migration when warblers and waterfowl move through the riparian habitat.
The park is at its best from late spring through early fall, when the canal trail is fully accessible and wildflowers line the towpath. Autumn brings vivid foliage reflected in the still canal water — worth the trip with a camera.
Camping availability is unconfirmed, so check with New York State Parks before planning an overnight visit. No entrance fee is required.
