Braddock Bay State Park
New York (Genesee County)
Sitting along the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Genesee County, Braddock Bay State Park offers 387 acres of wetlands, woodlands, and waterfront that draw visitors year-round. Established in 1956, the park has quietly become one of western New York’s best-kept secrets for birders, anglers, and anyone looking to spend a day outdoors without the crowds of the Finger Lakes.
Braddock Bay is renowned as one of the premier bird migration corridors in the northeastern United States. Each spring, thousands of raptors funnel along the Lake Ontario shoreline, making the park a must-visit destination for hawk-watching from March through May. The surrounding marshlands also attract herons, waterfowl, and songbirds throughout the warmer months, so bring binoculars regardless of when you visit.
Beyond birding, the park offers solid fishing access — largemouth bass, northern pike, and panfish are common catches in the bay’s shallow, weedy waters. Kayaking and canoeing through the marsh channels provide a peaceful way to explore the landscape up close. Hiking trails wind through the wooded areas, offering easy walks suitable for families.
Camping availability has not been confirmed, so check with New York State Parks before planning an overnight trip.
The best time to visit is mid-April through early June, when the spring migration is at its peak and the wetlands are teeming with life. Summer brings warm water recreation, while fall foliage reflects beautifully off the bay’s calm surface. Expect a quiet, nature-focused experience — this park rewards patience and curiosity over thrill-seeking.
