Genesee Valley Greenway State Park
New York (Genesee County)
Stretching across 1,364 acres of Genesee County, the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park follows the historic route of the Genesee Valley Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad corridor through some of western New York’s most peaceful landscapes. Established in 1984, this linear park traces a 90-mile path through rolling farmland, wooded hollows, and small-town New York, offering a quiet alternative to the region’s more heavily visited destinations.
The Greenway is built for movement. Its crushed-stone and packed-earth trail draws hikers, cyclists, cross-country skiers, and horseback riders depending on the season. Birders will find productive stretches along wetland edges and creek crossings, while history enthusiasts can spot remnants of 19th-century canal locks and railroad infrastructure half-hidden in the undergrowth. The trail connects to the Erie Canalway Trail system, making longer multi-day routes possible for ambitious riders and walkers.
Camping availability along the Greenway is limited and not formally established throughout most sections, so plan accordingly if you’re hoping to overnight. Nearby state parks and private campgrounds in the Genesee Valley can fill that gap.
Visit in late September or early October for peak fall color — the corridor becomes a tunnel of red and gold maples that alone justifies the trip. Spring brings wildflowers and migrating warblers, though trails can be muddy after snowmelt.
Expect a low-key, uncrowded experience. This isn’t a spectacle park — it’s a long, quiet trail through real New York countryside, best appreciated at a slow pace.
