Stretching across 2,413 acres along Long Island’s southern barrier island, Jones Beach State Park has been one of New York’s most beloved coastal destinations since opening in 1929. Designed by master planner Robert Moses, the park features six and a half miles of white sand beach fronting the Atlantic Ocean, making it one of the largest public beaches on the East Coast.

The park offers far more than sunbathing. Swimmers can choose from multiple beach areas, each with its own character — from the family-friendly Central Mall area to the quieter West End. Surfing and surf fishing draw dedicated regulars, while the two-mile boardwalk is perfect for biking, jogging, or an evening stroll. Birdwatchers will find the park surprisingly rewarding, as the coastal habitat attracts migratory shorebirds, including piping plovers that nest here each spring.

The Jones Beach Theater, an open-air amphitheater on Zach’s Bay, hosts major concerts throughout summer and has become a Long Island cultural landmark in its own right. The park also features basketball and shuffleboard courts, a mini-golf course, and seasonal food concessions ranging from casual boardwalk fare to sit-down dining.

Camping is not available at Jones Beach, but nearby state parks on Long Island offer campground options for those planning an extended stay.

The best time to visit is June through September for beach season, though spring and fall bring smaller crowds and excellent conditions for walking, fishing, and wildlife watching. Expect large summer crowds on weekends — arriving before 10 AM is strongly recommended.
