Tucked into the Jemez Mountains of Sandoval County, Fenton Lake State Park offers 700 acres of high-country escape at roughly 7,900 feet elevation. The centerpiece is a 37-acre lake fed by the Rio Cebolla, surrounded by ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forest that feels worlds away from the desert lowlands below.

Fishing draws most visitors here. The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, and the quiet, no-wake waters make it ideal for shore casting, float tubes, and small boats with trolling motors. In winter, ice fishing takes over when conditions allow — a rarity among New Mexico’s state parks. The Rio Cebolla, running just south of the lake, adds another option for anglers who prefer moving water.

Beyond fishing, the park serves as a basecamp for exploring the broader Jemez region. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding Santa Fe National Forest, and the Valles Caldera National Preserve sits just up Highway 126. Wildlife watching is rewarding year-round, with elk, mule deer, and wild turkey frequently spotted near the campground at dawn and dusk.

The campground offers around 30 sites with vault toilets but no hookups — this is a rustic, unplugged experience. Sites sit among the trees with decent spacing, and summer weekends fill fast.

Visit between late May and early October for the best weather, though fall brings golden aspens and thinner crowds. Winter visitors should come prepared for snow and icy roads but will find a rare kind of mountain solitude.
