Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway
New Mexico
132.0 miles
Wind through the heart of northern New Mexico on the Jemez Mountain Trail, a 132-mile journey that reveals some of the state’s most dramatic and diverse landscapes. This National Scenic Byway climbs from high desert mesas into the forested peaks of the Jemez Mountains, passing ancient volcanic calderas, natural hot springs, and centuries-old pueblo communities along the way.
Travelers will discover the striking red rock formations of Jemez Canyon, the steaming waters of Soda Dam — a fascinating natural travertine formation — and the ruins of Jemez Historic Site, where ancestral Pueblo people lived for centuries. The route passes through the vast Valles Caldera National Preserve, a sprawling volcanic grassland ringed by forested mountains where elk herds graze in open meadows. Stands of ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests line the higher elevations, giving way to aspen groves that blaze gold each autumn.
Stop at Battleship Rock for a picnic, soak in the Jemez Hot Springs, or hike the trails surrounding Fenton Lake. The byway connects to Bandelier National Monument, home to remarkable cliff dwellings.
Allow a full day for this drive. Late September through mid-October offers peak fall color, though summer brings pleasant mountain temperatures and wildflowers.
