Valles Caldera National Preserve Dark Sky Reserve offers exceptional stargazing conditions within a dramatic volcanic caldera in northern New Mexico. Designated as a Dark Sky Reserve in 2021, this 89,000-acre preserve provides minimal light pollution and high elevation (8,500-11,000 feet) for outstanding celestial viewing.

The Milky Way stretches brilliantly overhead during summer months, while winter skies reveal the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy with striking clarity. The caldera’s open grasslands provide unobstructed 360-degree horizons ideal for meteor shower viewing, particularly the Perseids in August and Geminids in December.

Best stargazing occurs two hours after sunset through pre-dawn hours, with peak conditions during new moon phases. Summer and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for extended nighttime observation.
