Howell Peak Wilderness Study Area
Utah
Howell Peak Wilderness Study Area offers rugged backcountry exploration on BLM land in Utah‘s remote desert landscape. The terrain features steep cliffs and dramatic elevation changes, with shrub-covered lower slopes giving way to pinyon-juniper woodlands at higher elevations.
Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the WSA, allowing visitors to find secluded spots away from developed facilities. The area supports hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and auto touring on designated routes. Wildlife viewing and photography opportunities abound, particularly for those interested in the unique geology—Howell Peak is renowned for its Cambrian trilobite fossil beds. Near Antelope Peak, Council Cave boasts Utah’s largest cave entrance, visible from up to 50 miles away.
Access requires high-clearance vehicles on unpaved roads, and visitors should come prepared with all necessary supplies including water, as services are limited. The best times to visit are spring and fall when temperatures moderate; summers bring intense heat to the lower elevations.
This is true backcountry territory—pack accordingly and practice Leave No Trace principles throughout your stay.
