Winding through the rugged eastern Nevada landscape, Lehman Caves Road delivers 8.7 miles of stunning Great Basin scenery on this designated State Scenic Byway. The route climbs from the high desert floor toward the flanks of Wheeler Peak, offering dramatic shifts in terrain and vegetation with every mile gained in elevation.

Travelers pass through sun-baked sagebrush flats that give way to pinyon-juniper woodlands and eventually towering stands of mountain mahogany. The views open up to sweeping panoramas of Snake Valley and the distant mountain ranges that define Nevada’s basin-and-range geography. Keep an eye out for mule deer, golden eagles, and the occasional pronghorn along the roadside.

The marquee attraction is Lehman Caves itself, a spectacular marble cavern filled with rare shield formations, stalactites, and delicate limestone draperies available through guided tours at Great Basin National Park. Beyond the caves, the road connects to trails leading toward ancient bristlecone pine groves and alpine lakes beneath Wheeler Peak’s 13,063-foot summit.

Allow one to two hours for the drive with stops for photos and trailhead exploration. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with wildflower blooms peaking in June and golden aspens lighting up September and October.
