Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park
Islamorada, Florida (Monroe County)
Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park offers a rare window into Florida’s ancient past. Set on 32 acres in Islamorada, this small but remarkable park sits atop a fossilized coral reef formed roughly 125,000 years ago during the Pleistocene era. The exposed quarry walls—left behind from early 20th-century railroad and road construction—reveal cross-sections of ancient coral, sea fans, and marine organisms preserved in the limestone, making it one of the best places in the Keys to see geological history up close.
Three short, self-guided trails wind through the old quarry pits, where interpretive signs explain the formations and the role this stone played in building Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad. The park’s Environmental Education Center houses additional exhibits on Keys geology and ecology. Bring a camera—the quarry walls photograph beautifully, especially when afternoon light catches the fossil textures.
There is no camping at Windley Key. The park is day-use only, and visits typically last one to two hours, making it an easy stop between Key Largo and the Middle Keys. The trails are flat and accessible, though the exposed rock surfaces can be uneven in places—sturdy shoes are recommended over sandals.
The best time to visit is November through April, when temperatures are comfortable and humidity is lower. Summer visits work fine but can be hot with little shade in the quarry areas. With a 4.5-star rating across 720 reviews, this geological gem consistently surprises visitors who stumble upon it expecting just another roadside stop.
