John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
Key Largo, Florida (Monroe County)
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park holds a distinction no other state park in the United States can claim — it was the first undersea park in the country. Established in 1963 in Key Largo, this 53,000-acre preserve protects a stunning portion of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, extending roughly three miles into the Atlantic Ocean.
The real draw here is what lies beneath the surface. Snorkeling and scuba diving dominate the experience, with organized boat trips departing daily to reef sites where elkhorn coral, brain coral, and hundreds of tropical fish species create an underwater world that rivals anything in the Caribbean. The iconic Christ of the Abyss statue, a nine-foot bronze figure resting in 25 feet of water, is one of the most photographed underwater landmarks in Florida. Glass-bottom boat tours offer a dry alternative for those who prefer to stay above water.
Back on land, mangrove-lined kayak and canoe trails wind through protected shoreline ecosystems. A small swimming beach provides calm, shallow water, and the visitor center houses a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium that previews what you’ll encounter on the reef.
The best time to visit is November through April, when water visibility peaks and temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s. Summer brings warmer water but occasional afternoon storms and reduced visibility.
With a 4.5-star rating across more than 10,700 reviews, Pennekamp consistently ranks among Florida’s most beloved parks — and for good reason. This is a place where the ocean does the talking.
