Watts Towers of Simon Rodia State Historic Park
Los Angeles, California (Los Angeles County)
Rising from a residential neighborhood in South Los Angeles, the Watts Towers stand as one of America’s most remarkable works of folk art — a collection of 17 interconnected sculptural structures built single-handedly by Italian immigrant Simon Rodia over 33 years, from 1921 to 1954. The tallest tower reaches nearly 100 feet, and every inch is encrusted with a mosaic of broken pottery, seashells, glass bottles, ceramic tiles, and other found materials pressed into mortar-covered steel frames. Rodia used no machinery, no scaffolding, and no bolts — just hand tools, a window-washer’s belt, and an extraordinary vision.
At just 0.11 acres, this is one of California’s smallest state historic parks, but its cultural impact is enormous. The towers were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990 and remain a powerful symbol of artistic determination and immigrant creativity. Visitors can view the towers up close on guided tours offered through the adjacent Watts Towers Arts Center, which also hosts exhibitions, workshops, and community events. The annual Watts Towers Day of the Drum and Jazz Festival each September draws thousands and is worth planning a trip around.
There are no camping facilities here — this is an urban cultural site best experienced as a half-day visit. The towers are stunning in afternoon light when the embedded glass and ceramic fragments catch the sun. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for exploring outdoors in LA.
Rated 4.5 out of 5 by visitors, the Watts Towers reward anyone who makes the trip with something truly unlike anything else in the country.
