Perched on the bluffs of San Pedro in Los Angeles, Point Fermin Light has guided mariners since 1874, making it one of Southern California’s oldest lighthouses. The Victorian Stick-Eastlake style residence, with its distinctive redwood construction, was designed by Paul J. Pelz, who also co-designed the Library of Congress. The lighthouse was decommissioned and is no longer active. While the grounds of Point Fermin Park are open, the lighthouse interior is not currently open to the public and cannot be climbed. The best photography light comes at golden hour, when the setting sun illuminates the structure against ocean views. Nearby, visitors can explore the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, the Korean Friendship Bell, and the tidepools at White Point.
