Washoe Meadows State Park
South Lake Tahoe, California (El Dorado County)
Tucked along the Upper Truckee River on the south side of Lake Tahoe, Washoe Meadows State Park protects 628 acres of open meadowland, Jeffrey pine forest, and riparian habitat in El Dorado County. Unlike its busier neighbors, this park feels genuinely uncrowded — a quiet stretch of nature just minutes from the restaurants and ski resorts of South Lake Tahoe.
The Upper Truckee River winds through the heart of the park, creating lush meadows that burst with wildflowers from late May through July. Hikers and trail runners will find several miles of easy-to-moderate paths crossing grasslands and weaving through stands of pine and fir. The relatively flat terrain makes this an excellent choice for families with young kids or anyone who wants a peaceful walk without a lung-burning climb. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars — the meadow-to-forest transition zones attract woodpeckers, mountain bluebirds, and the occasional osprey fishing the river.
Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow, giving the park genuine year-round appeal. Note that Washoe Meadows is a day-use park with no developed campground, so plan accommodations in nearby South Lake Tahoe if you’re staying overnight.
The best window to visit is June through October, when trails are dry and the meadows are at their most photogenic. Early mornings reward visitors with soft light and active wildlife before the afternoon warmth settles in.
Rated 4.4 out of 5 across 110 reviews, Washoe Meadows delivers exactly what Lake Tahoe visitors rarely find: solitude.
