Grand Marais Light

Grand Marais Light

Lake Superior · Minnesota

Perched on the breakwater of Grand Marais Harbor, this charming lighthouse has guided vessels along Lake Superior’s North Shore since 1885. The modest white steel tower remains an active navigational aid maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, its light still warning mariners of the rocky coastline.

While the lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, visitors can walk the harbor breakwater for excellent close-up views. The best photography opportunities come at sunrise, when the light catches the tower against the vast expanse of Lake Superior, or during dramatic autumn storms.

Nearby, explore the vibrant arts community of Grand Marais, the Gunflint Trail, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
