Susquehanna State Park
Maryland (Cecil, Harford County)
Susquehanna State Park stretches across 2,753 acres where the Susquehanna River meets Deer Creek in Harford County, Maryland — a landscape shaped by centuries of human history and the raw power of moving water. This isn’t a manicured picnic-ground park; it’s a place where rocky river bluffs, dense hardwood forests, and historic stone buildings create something genuinely memorable.
The park’s centerpiece is the Susquehanna River itself, offering some of the best freshwater fishing in the mid-Atlantic. Anglers chase smallmouth bass, catfish, and walleye along the rocky shoreline, while kayakers and canoeists navigate the river’s quieter stretches. Deer Creek adds excellent wading and fly fishing opportunities, particularly during spring and early summer.
Hikers will find roughly 15 miles of trails ranging from easy riverside strolls to steeper ridge climbs with sweeping views of the river valley. The Rock Run Historic Area — featuring the restored Rock Run Grist Mill, a stone mansion, and a tollhouse — gives the park a depth that pure wilderness areas lack.
Camping is available at a wooded campground with both tent and RV sites, typically open from April through October. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends, so reservations are worth planning ahead for.
Spring wildflower season and fall foliage are the standout times to visit, though summer draws the biggest crowds for water activities. Winter brings quiet trails and surprisingly good fishing. Expect well-maintained facilities, moderate trail traffic, and a landscape that rewards exploration beyond the main parking areas.
