Perched high above the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Susquehannock State Park offers some of the most dramatic overlook views in Pennsylvania. This compact 224-acre park, established in 1965, sits along the river’s Lower Susquehanna Gorge — a stretch where the waterway carves through ancient rock formations before flowing into the Chesapeake Bay.

The park’s signature feature is its series of overlooks, including Wissler’s Run and Hawk Point, where visitors can gaze across the wide river valley and spot bald eagles riding thermals below. The gorge area is one of Pennsylvania’s most important raptor habitats, making this a prime destination for birdwatching, particularly during fall migration season.

Five miles of hiking trails wind through mature hardwood forests and along the bluffs. The Rhododendron Trail is especially rewarding in late June and early July when dense thickets burst into bloom. The Fire Trail and Overlook Trail connect to panoramic viewpoints that reward relatively easy hikes with outsized scenery.

Picnic areas with pavilions make the park a solid choice for day trips, and the quiet, wooded setting provides a welcome escape from the more heavily trafficked Lancaster County attractions. Fishing access to the Susquehanna is available nearby.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — spring for wildflowers and nesting eagles, fall for hawk migration and foliage that lights up the gorge in orange and crimson. Summer brings lush canopy shade but also humidity. Winter visits reward with stark, unobstructed river views and solitude.
