Elk Neck State Park
Maryland (Cecil County)
Elk Neck State Park
Tucked into the peninsula where the Elk River meets the Chesapeake Bay, Elk Neck State Park stretches across 2,369 acres of Cecil County’s most varied terrain. Sandy beaches give way to marshlands, dense hardwood forests climb gentle bluffs, and white clay cliffs drop sharply to the water’s edge — all within a single park.
The crown jewel here is Turkey Point Lighthouse, perched atop 100-foot bluffs at the tip of the peninsula. A flat, shaded trail winds about a mile through the forest to reach it, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the upper Chesapeake Bay. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Maryland’s state park system for good reason.
Beyond the lighthouse trail, the park offers solid hiking on interconnected loops through mature forest, paddling along sheltered shoreline, fishing for largemouth bass and catfish in the Elk River, and swimming at a sandy beach along the bay. Birders will find the marshlands productive, particularly during spring and fall migration when warblers and raptors move through the Chesapeake corridor.
The park sits in a transitional zone between the Piedmont Plateau and the Coastal Plain, giving it an ecological diversity you won’t find at most Maryland state parks. Late spring through early fall is the prime window — the beach is swimmable from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and fall foliage along the bluffs is quietly spectacular in mid-October.
Bring bug spray in summer. The marshlands are generous with mosquitoes.
