Summit Lake State Park
Tucked into the rolling countryside of Henry County near New Castle, Summit Lake State Park offers 2,680 acres of eastern Indiana landscape centered around its namesake 800-acre reservoir. Established in 1988, this park is one of Indiana’s newer state parks, yet it has quickly earned a loyal following — reflected in its strong 4.6 out of 5 rating from 2024 visitor reviews.
Summit Lake itself is the main draw. The reservoir provides excellent fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, with boat ramps and rental options making it easy to get on the water. Kayakers and canoeists appreciate the lake’s no-wake zones, where the water stays calm enough to spot great blue herons wading along the shoreline. Hikers can explore several miles of trails that wind through hardwood forests and restored prairie, with the 3-mile Heritage Trail offering views of the lake from wooded ridgelines.
Birdwatching is particularly rewarding here. The mix of wetland, forest, and grassland habitats attracts a wide variety of species, especially during spring and fall migration. The park also features a swimming beach that draws families throughout the summer months.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the lake is fully accessible and wildflowers dot the prairie sections. Autumn brings vivid foliage with fewer crowds — a sweet spot for a quiet weekend getaway.
Whether you’re casting a line at dawn or paddling across glassy water at sunset, Summit Lake rewards visitors who appreciate Indiana’s quieter corners.
