the Historic Pathways Scenic Byway
Indiana
250.0 miles
Stretching 250 miles across southern Indiana, the Historic Pathways Scenic Byway traces the footsteps of early pioneers and Abraham Lincoln himself along one of America’s most historically rich corridors.
Beginning at the Ohio state line near Lawrenceburg and winding through to Vincennes at the Wabash River, this National Scenic Byway connects three distinct heritage routes. Along the way, you’ll encounter the fascinating Falls of the Ohio State Park, where 390-million-year-old fossil beds emerge from the river during low water—one of the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world.
The route meanders through rolling hills blanketed in hardwood forests, past covered bridges, limestone caves, and charming river towns that seem frozen in time. Stop at historic Corydon, Indiana’s first state capitol, or explore the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial where young Abe spent his formative years.
Small-town diners, antique shops, and roadside farm stands punctuate the journey, offering authentic Hoosier hospitality.
Best time to visit: Fall brings spectacular foliage, while spring showcases wildflowers and waterfalls at their peak.
Allow: Two to three days to fully appreciate the historic sites, natural wonders, and unhurried pace this byway deserves.
