Scioto Trail State Park
Ohio (Ross County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Ross County, Scioto Trail State Park covers 248 acres of rugged Appalachian foothills where dense hardwood forests meet quiet hollows. Named for the ancient path that connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River — a route used by the Shawnee and other Native peoples for centuries — this park sits within a larger stretch of state forest that makes it feel far more expansive than its acreage suggests.
Hikers will find the real draw here. The park’s trail system winds through steep ravines and ridgelines thick with oak, hickory, and beech, offering genuine elevation changes that are uncommon in much of Ohio. In autumn, these hills put on one of the region’s best fall color displays, making October the standout month to visit. Spring wildflower season runs a close second, with trillium, bloodroot, and Virginia bluebells carpeting the forest floor from late March through April.
A 15-acre lake provides fishing for bass and bluegill, and the surrounding woods support white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and red-tailed hawks. Birders should bring binoculars — the mixed forest habitat attracts warblers during spring migration.
The park is well-suited for a quiet overnight stay. Facilities are modest and the pace is unhurried, which is exactly the point. Nearby Chillicothe offers restaurants and supplies, plus the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park — one of Ohio’s most significant archaeological sites — is just minutes away.
Scioto Trail rewards visitors looking for solitude and honest woodland scenery without the crowds of Ohio’s bigger parks.
