A. W. Marion State Park sits quietly in Pickaway County, Ohio, offering 454 acres of rolling terrain centered around Hargus Lake. Named after a former director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, this park delivers a solid mix of water-based recreation and land trails without the crowds you’ll find at Ohio’s bigger-name parks.

Hargus Lake is the main draw. The 145-acre reservoir supports fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish — it’s a reliable spot for anglers who prefer a calm, uncrowded shoreline. Electric motors only, so the water stays peaceful. A public beach opens for swimming in summer, and small boats, canoes, and kayaks launch easily from the ramp.

On land, hiking trails wind through meadows and wooded areas surrounding the lake. The terrain is gentle, making it accessible for families and casual walkers. Birders will find the wetland edges productive, especially during spring and fall migration when warblers and shorebirds pass through central Ohio’s flyway.

Spring and early fall are the best times to visit. Summer brings swimming season but also heat and humidity; fall delivers quieter trails and good fishing as water temperatures drop. Winter is sparse but fine for a cold-weather hike.

The park sits just south of Circleville off U.S. Route 22, making it an easy day trip from Columbus — about 30 miles south. It’s an understated park that rewards visitors looking for low-key outdoor time rather than resort-style amenities.
