Hocking Hills State Park sprawls across 2,373 acres of southeastern Ohio’s Hocking County, where ancient Blackhand sandstone has been carved by millennia of water into some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Midwest. This isn’t the flat Ohio most people picture — it’s a region of deep gorges, recessed caves, and waterfalls that feel transported from Appalachia.

The park’s crown jewel is Old Man’s Cave, a half-mile gorge trail that winds past cascading waterfalls and beneath massive rock overhangs. Ash Cave, the largest recess cave in Ohio at 700 feet wide, is equally stunning and wheelchair-accessible. Cedar Falls, Conkle’s Hollow, and Rock House round out the park’s signature formations, each worth a dedicated visit.

Hiking dominates here, with trails ranging from easy paved paths to rugged rim trails along cliff edges. Rock climbing, rappelling, and zip-lining draw adventure seekers, while fishing and canoeing on the Hocking River offer a slower pace. Winter transforms the waterfalls into ice sculptures, making it a surprisingly compelling cold-weather destination.

The park offers family-friendly camping with electric sites, plus nearby cabins and lodges for those who prefer a roof. Weekends from May through October draw heavy crowds — visit midweek or in late autumn for quieter trails draped in color.

Come prepared for uneven terrain and stairs. Cell service is spotty in the gorges. Pack layers year-round, as the shaded valleys run noticeably cooler than surrounding areas.
