Patapsco Valley State Park
Maryland (Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard County)
Stretching across four Maryland counties — Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, and Howard — Patapsco Valley State Park follows the winding Patapsco River through more than 14,000 acres of forested valleys, rocky ridgelines, and historic mill towns. It’s one of the oldest and largest state parks in Maryland, and its sheer reach means you could visit dozens of times without covering the same ground twice.
The park is divided into several distinct recreation areas, each with its own character. The Avalon and Orange Grove areas draw hikers to the Cascade Falls trail, a relatively easy walk to one of the prettiest waterfalls in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Mountain bikers flock to the Avalon and Hilton areas for miles of singletrack winding through hardwood forest. The McKeldin Area, tucked into Carroll County, offers a quieter experience with river access and open meadows ideal for picnicking.
Fishing along the Patapsco River is popular for smallmouth bass and sunfish, while the paved trolley trail connecting Avalon to Glen Artney gives families and casual cyclists a flat, scenic route. Rock climbing, horseback riding, and disc golf round out the options.
Spring wildflower season and fall foliage are the standout times to visit, though summer swimming holes near the river keep the park busy year-round. Winter hiking offers solitude and striking bare-canopy views of the valley.
Expect well-maintained trails, occasional crowds at the most popular trailheads on weekends, and a park that rewards those willing to explore beyond the parking lot.
