Stretching across more than 15,000 acres of Baltimore and Harford Counties, Gunpowder Falls State Park is one of Maryland’s largest state parks — and one of its most varied. The park follows the winding path of the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls rivers, creating a patchwork of wildly different landscapes: tidal marshes along the Chesapeake Bay, deep hemlock-shaded gorges, open meadows, and dense hardwood forests.

What makes Gunpowder Falls exceptional is its range. Kayakers and paddleboarders launch from the Hammerman Area’s sandy beach on the Gunpowder River estuary, while fly fishers work the cold, trout-stocked waters upstream in the Hereford Area — two experiences that feel like entirely different parks. Over 120 miles of trails wind through the property, including stretches of the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, a paved path popular with cyclists and families.

Hikers will find everything from easy riverside walks to rugged scrambles through the Gunpowder Valley. The Wildlands area offers some of the most remote, trail-less terrain in the Baltimore region — ideal for experienced bushwhackers looking for solitude. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and hunting are permitted in designated sections.

Spring wildflower displays along the river valleys are outstanding, and fall foliage draws crowds to the Hereford Area. Summer brings swimmers and picnickers to Hammerman’s beach. Winter is quiet and uncrowded — perfect for trail running or a cold-weather hike through frosted hemlock groves.

Gunpowder Falls is the kind of park that rewards repeat visits. There’s always another trail, another river bend, another reason to come back.
