Neskowin Beach State Recreation Site sits along Oregon’s Central Coast, where the Pacific meets one of the quietest stretches of shoreline between Lincoln City and Pacific City. This small recreation site punches well above its weight thanks to one unforgettable landmark: Proposal Rock, a tree-topped sea stack rising directly from the sand at the mouth of Neskowin Creek.

At low tide, the beach reveals the Ghost Forest — the stumps of an ancient Sitka spruce forest submerged by a massive earthquake roughly 2,000 years ago. These weathered stumps emerge from the sand like monuments, drawing photographers and curious visitors year-round. It’s one of the most striking geological features on the entire Oregon coast.

The beach itself is ideal for long walks, beachcombing, and tide pool exploration along the rocky outcroppings. Neskowin Creek offers a shallow wading area popular with families, and surfers occasionally work the breaks near Proposal Rock. Birdwatching is rewarding here too — look for black oystercatchers on the rocks and brown pelicans offshore.

There are no campgrounds at the recreation site itself, but the village of Neskowin offers vacation rentals and the nearby roads connect to campgrounds further along the coast.

Visit between June and September for the warmest weather and lowest tides that expose the Ghost Forest. Fall brings dramatic storms perfect for wave-watching from the bluff. Expect a laid-back, uncrowded atmosphere — Neskowin has deliberately stayed small, and the beach reflects that unhurried character. No entrance fees apply.
