A network of trails winds through the property, offering roughly 2 miles of easy walking through dramatically different landscapes. The main trail crosses boardwalks over wetland areas before opening onto sweeping views of Sand Lake and the Pacific dunes beyond. Birdwatchers will find this site exceptional — the estuary attracts shorebirds, raptors, herons, and migratory species year-round, with peak diversity during spring and fall migrations. The varied habitat also supports elk, which are frequently spotted grazing in the meadows during early morning visits.

The flat, accessible terrain works well for families and casual hikers. There are no camping facilities on-site, but nearby Sand Lake Recreation Area and Cape Lookout State Park offer full campground amenities within a short drive.

Visit from late spring through early fall for the driest conditions and warmest temperatures, though winter birding here can be extraordinary. Expect muddy trail sections during the rainy season — waterproof footwear is essential from October through May. No fees or permits are required.
