Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island
Tucked along the Sandlake Estuary on Oregon’s northern coast, Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island is one of those quiet gems that rewards visitors who skip the more famous beaches. The 139-acre natural area wraps around Whalen Island, where a loop trail winds through coastal forest, open meadows, and tidal mudflats — offering views of the estuary and surrounding dunes that feel miles from civilization.
Birders come here for the shorebirds and wading species that feed along the estuary’s edge, especially during spring and fall migration. Great blue herons, ospreys, and bald eagles are regulars. The mudflats at low tide are a living classroom of crabs, anemones, and small fish trapped in shallow pools. Kayaking and canoeing the calm estuary waters is a standout experience — the protected channels are far more approachable than the open ocean, making this an ideal spot for paddlers of all skill levels.
The natural area has a small, first-come-first-served campground with basic sites right on the water — no hookups, no reservations, and no crowds. It fills on summer weekends but stays manageable midweek. Restrooms and picnic tables are available.
The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when rain eases and the estuary teems with life. Winter visits bring dramatic weather and solitude but expect mud on the trails.
Come here when you want the Oregon coast without the tour buses — just birds, water, and salt air.
