Roads End State Recreation Site
Tucked at the northern tip of Lincoln City, Roads End State Recreation Site marks where the road literally ends and the Pacific Ocean takes over. This small but rewarding coastal access point sits beneath a rugged headland where waves crash against dark basalt rock, carving out sea caves and exposing some of the central Oregon coast’s best tidepools.
The main draw here is the beach itself — a wide stretch of sand that connects to Lincoln City’s seven-mile coastline to the south. At low tide, the rocky headland reveals pools teeming with sea anemones, purple sea urchins, hermit crabs, and ochre sea stars. A partially accessible sea cave on the north side of the headland makes for a memorable short scramble, though visitors should always check tide tables before exploring.
Beyond tidepooling, Roads End is popular for beachcombing, surfing, kite flying, and storm watching during winter months. The site has a small parking area and beach access trail but no camping facilities — for overnight stays, Devil’s Lake State Recreation Area is just a few minutes south.
The best time to visit is during summer for calm conditions and accessible tidepools, or winter for dramatic storm watching from the bluff. Low tide windows are essential for exploring the rocks and caves safely.
Roads End doesn’t demand a full day, but it delivers one of those quiet, slightly wild coastal moments that make Oregon’s shoreline unlike anywhere else.
