Myles Standish State Forest
Massachusetts (Plymouth County)
Myles Standish State Forest spans over 12,000 acres across Plymouth County, making it the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts. Named for the Pilgrim colony’s military leader, this vast state forest offers a landscape unlike much of New England — pitch pine and scrub oak barrens stretch across sandy, glacially shaped terrain dotted with more than a dozen kettle ponds, many with crystal-clear water perfect for swimming.
The forest is a genuine escape from the dense coastal development surrounding it. Miles of trails wind through the barrens for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, while the ponds — including popular Charge Pond and Fearing Pond — draw swimmers, kayakers, and anglers chasing bass and pickerel. In winter, the trail network transforms into routes for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Camping is a major draw here, with hundreds of wooded campsites spread across several campground areas near the ponds. Sites are reservable and tend to fill quickly during summer weekends, so booking ahead is essential. The campgrounds serve as a surprisingly accessible base for exploring both the forest and nearby Plymouth, just a short drive east.
The best time to visit runs from late May through October. Summer brings warm pond swimming and full campground operations, while fall delivers stunning color across the oak canopy with far fewer crowds. Spring can be muddy but peaceful.
Come prepared for sandy, well-drained trails and bring plenty of water — shade can be sparse in the open barrens on hot days.
