Monmouth Battlefield State Park preserves the site of one of the largest and most significant battles of the American Revolution. On June 28, 1778, General Washington’s Continental Army clashed with British forces under Sir Henry Clinton across these rolling farmlands — a grueling fight in extreme heat that proved the Continental Army could stand toe-to-toe with British regulars. Today, the park’s 1,818 acres of open fields, hedgerows, and wooded hills look remarkably similar to what those soldiers saw nearly 250 years ago.
The battlefield itself is the main draw. A network of trails winds past key landmarks including the Craig House, which served as a field hospital during the battle, and Comb’s Hill, where American artillery was positioned. Interpretive markers along the way bring the tactical story to life without requiring a history degree to appreciate. Beyond the battlefield trails, the park offers miles of paths for hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing in winter. Birders will find the mix of grassland and forest habitat productive, particularly during spring and fall migration.
The visitor center houses exhibits and a fiber-optic battle map that walks you through the engagement step by step — worth the stop before heading out on foot.
Late spring through early fall is ideal for visiting, with the annual battle reenactment in June drawing thousands. Autumn brings fewer crowds and beautiful foliage across the open farmland. Note that camping is not available at this park, but picnic areas are plentiful throughout the grounds.
