Lake Wateree State Park

Tucked along the eastern shore of Lake Wateree in Fairfield County, this 238-acre state park offers one of the best lakeside escapes in South Carolina’s Midlands region. The park sits on a 13,000-acre reservoir fed by the Catawba-Wateree River, giving visitors access to expansive open water that feels more like a coastal destination than an inland lake.

Fishing is the main draw here. Lake Wateree is renowned for its largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie populations, and the park provides a public boat ramp for easy lake access. Bank fishing along the shoreline works well for casual anglers, while kayakers and canoeists can explore quieter coves where herons wade through the shallows.

The campground features 72 sites — a mix of tent and RV spots — many with direct lake views. Sites include water and electric hookups, and a central bathhouse keeps things comfortable for extended stays. For day visitors, a swimming area with a sandy beach provides relief during South Carolina’s long, humid summers.

Hiking trails wind through pine and hardwood forests along the lakeshore, offering easy walks suited for families. Birding is rewarding year-round, with osprey and bald eagles frequently spotted over the water.

The best time to visit is April through June, when temperatures are warm but manageable and the fishing peaks. Fall weekends draw smaller crowds with pleasant weather and foliage along the waterline. Summer stays require bug spray and an early start — the midday heat is no joke.
