Landsford Canal State Park sits along the banks of the Catawba River in Lancaster County, South Carolina, protecting 448 acres of river corridor, historic canal ruins, and one of nature’s most stunning seasonal displays. Every May and June, the rocky shoals of the Catawba erupt with thousands of spider lilies — the largest known stand of *Hymenocallis coronaria* in existence. These delicate white flowers bloom directly from the river’s rocks, creating a scene that draws photographers and nature lovers from across the Southeast.

Beyond the lilies, the park preserves remnants of a 19th-century canal system built to bypass the river’s rapids for cotton transport. A 1.5-mile Canal Trail follows the old towpath alongside crumbling stone locks and walls, offering an easy, shaded walk that doubles as a history lesson. The trail ends at an overlook where the river spreads wide across exposed granite — the spider lilies’ stage.

Kayakers and canoeists can paddle the Catawba here, though the shoals demand respect during higher water. Fishing for catfish, bass, and bream is popular along the riverbank. Birding is rewarding year-round, with herons, kingfishers, and the occasional bald eagle working the water.

The park does not offer camping, but picnic shelters and restrooms make it ideal for day trips. Chester and Lancaster are both a short drive away for dining and lodging.
