Sesquicentennial State Park — known locally as “Sesqui” — offers 1,419 acres of sandhills ecology just 13 miles northeast of downtown Columbia, making it one of the most accessible natural escapes in the South Carolina Midlands. The park sits within Richland County on a landscape shaped by an ancient coastline, where longleaf pines tower above wiregrass understory in a habitat that once blanketed much of the Southeast.

The centerpiece is a 30-acre spring-fed lake, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s along with several log structures that still stand today. The lake draws anglers for bass, bream, and catfish, while a small sandy beach area provides a cool retreat during South Carolina’s long summers. Paddlers can rent kayaks and pedal boats to explore the quiet water.

Over two miles of hiking and nature trails wind through the pine-dominated forest, and a paved multi-use path accommodates cyclists and joggers. Birders find the park productive year-round, with red-cockaded woodpecker habitat in the surrounding longleaf stands. The park also features a splashpad, playground, and picnic shelters that make it a solid choice for families.

Camping options include tent and RV sites with water and electric hookups, plus a group camping area. Several rental cabins offer a step up in comfort for those who prefer a roof overhead.
