The Marlette-Hobart Backcountry stretches into the Carson Range with over 30 miles of trails threading through Jeffrey pine forests and alpine meadows.

Mountain biking on the Flume Trail ranks among the most iconic rides in the West, tracing a narrow path 1,500 feet above the lake with jaw-dropping panoramic views. Kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and picnicking round out the warm-weather options, while winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing to the backcountry zones.

Summer weekends at Sand Harbor fill up fast — arrive before 9 AM or you’ll likely face a full-lot closure. September and early October offer the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, thin enough crowds to breathe, and aspens turning gold across the hillsides.

Bring layers year-round. At 6,200 feet, afternoon thunderstorms roll in quickly, and lake breezes carry a surprising chill even in July.
