High Point Monument
New Jersey (Wantage and Montague Townships County)
Standing at 1,803 feet above sea level, High Point Monument marks the highest elevation in New Jersey and offers panoramic views stretching across three states. The 220-foot obelisk, built in 1930 as a war memorial, rises from the Kittatinny Ridge and is visible for miles in every direction. On clear days, visitors can see the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, the Catskills of New York, and the farmland of the Wallkill River Valley below.
Located in Wantage and Montague Townships, the surrounding state park delivers far more than just the monument itself. Over 50 miles of trails wind through cedar swamps, hardwood forests, and along dramatic ridge lines. The Appalachian Trail passes directly through the park, making it a popular stop for thru-hikers and day hikers alike. Lake Marcia, a spring-fed glacial lake near the summit, provides swimming in summer months, while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing draw visitors through winter.
Birdwatching is exceptional here during fall hawk migration, when thousands of raptors ride thermals along the Kittatinny Ridge. Fishing, picnicking, and nature photography round out the warm-weather activities.
The best time to visit is mid-October, when the surrounding forests erupt in peak fall color and the views from the monument become truly spectacular. Spring wildflower season, typically late April through May, is another standout window.
Expect a well-maintained park with accessible roads leading to the monument summit and clearly marked trail systems throughout.
