Sterling Forest State Park

Tucked into the rugged highlands of Palisades County, Sterling Forest State Park spans over 22,000 acres of protected wilderness that nearly became a suburban subdivision. When New York acquired the land in 1998 after a decades-long conservation battle, it preserved one of the largest undeveloped tracts in the lower Hudson Valley — and a critical watershed feeding drinking water to millions of New Jersey and New York residents.

The park’s terrain rolls through dense hardwood forests, rocky ridgelines, and quiet wetlands threaded with streams. Over 30 miles of trails range from easy lakeside strolls to demanding ridge hikes with views stretching toward the Manhattan skyline on clear days. The Sterling Ridge Trail and the Indian Hill Loop are local favorites, offering solitude that nearby Bear Mountain and Harriman rarely provide despite being just miles away.

Birding is exceptional here, particularly during spring warbler migration when the forest canopy comes alive. Fishing, mountain biking on designated trails, and cross-country skiing in winter round out the seasonal options. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during season.

Camping availability has varied over the years, so check with the park office before planning an overnight stay.

Fall is the standout season — the hardwood canopy puts on one of the best foliage displays in the Hudson Valley, typically peaking in mid-October. Spring wildflower season runs a close second. Summer brings humidity and ticks, so come prepared with proper clothing and repellent.
