Shirley Chisholm State Park

Named after the trailblazing Brooklyn congresswoman, Shirley Chisholm State Park is one of New York City’s newest and most remarkable green spaces. Opened in 2019 on a reclaimed landfill site in southeastern Brooklyn, this 407-acre park transforms what was once a dumping ground into rolling hills, native grasslands, and sweeping waterfront views — a powerful story of urban renewal.

The park sits along Jamaica Bay, offering surprisingly expansive vistas that feel worlds away from the city’s concrete grid. Ten miles of multi-use trails wind through the landscape, welcoming hikers, joggers, and mountain bikers across terrain that includes some of the highest elevations in Brooklyn. The hilltop viewpoints reward visitors with panoramic views of the bay, the Manhattan skyline, and the surrounding marshlands.

Birdwatching is exceptional here, particularly during spring and fall migrations when Jamaica Bay draws shorebirds, raptors, and warblers. Kayak and canoe launches provide water access for paddlers exploring the bay’s tidal creeks. Fishing is popular along the waterfront, and the park hosts regular community programming including guided nature walks and cultural events.

Camping is not currently offered at the park. There are no overnight facilities on-site.

Spring through fall delivers the best experience, with wildflower blooms peaking in late spring and early summer. Winter visits offer stark beauty and excellent birding with fewer crowds. The park is accessible by public transit, making it one of the most reachable state parks in the entire system.
