Gorges State Park
Tucked into the Blue Ridge Escarpment where North Carolina drops sharply toward South Carolina, Gorges State Park protects 7,709 acres of some of the most rugged, waterfall-rich terrain in the southern Appalachians. Established in 1999, the park sits in a unique microclimate — the escarpment’s steep elevation changes wring moisture from warm air rising off the piedmont, creating a temperate rainforest that receives more than 80 inches of rain annually. That abundance of water feeds dramatic cascades, including Rainbow Falls, a 150-foot plunge accessible via a moderately strenuous trail.
The park’s network of trails ranges from short waterfall hikes to challenging backcountry routes that descend thousands of feet through dense cove hardwood forests. Fishing is excellent along the Horsepasture River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River that cuts through the park’s southern boundary. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and paddling on Lake Jocassee — accessible from the park’s lower trailheads — round out the options.
Spring brings peak waterfall flow and wildflower displays across the forest floor, while fall delivers vivid color along the escarpment. Summer humidity is intense at lower elevations but comfortable along ridgeline trails. Winter offers solitude and ice-trimmed cascades, though trails can be slippery.
Come prepared for steep, rocky terrain and rapidly changing weather. Cell service is limited, and some trailheads require gravel road access. Gorges rewards visitors willing to work for their views — this isn’t a drive-through park, and that’s exactly the point.
