Devils Fork State Park sits on the shores of Lake Jocassee in Oconee County, South Carolina, offering access to one of the most pristine mountain lakes in the Southeast. Spanning 622 acres, the park serves as the only public access point to Lake Jocassee — a deep, cold-water lake fed by mountain streams and surrounded by undeveloped forested ridgelines.

Lake Jocassee is the main draw. Its remarkably clear water supports excellent trout fishing, including brown and rainbow trout, and visibility that makes it a favorite among scuba divers exploring submerged waterfalls and old building foundations beneath the surface. Kayaking and boating are popular, with a public boat ramp available on-site. Several waterfalls along the lake’s edges, including the striking Laurel Fork Falls, are accessible only by water.

On land, hikers can explore the Oconee Bell Nature Trail, named for the rare wildflower found almost exclusively in this region. The park’s trails wind through cove hardwood forests rich with mountain laurel, rhododendron, and ferns. Birding is rewarding here, particularly during spring migration.

The park offers both lakefront villa accommodations and traditional campsites, making it suitable for a range of comfort levels. The villas with lake views book up quickly, so plan ahead for peak season.

Spring brings the Oconee bells into bloom and comfortable temperatures for hiking. Fall offers vivid foliage reflected in the lake’s glassy surface. Summer is prime for water activities, though weekends draw crowds at the boat ramp. Visit midweek when possible for a quieter experience.
