Golden Hill State Park
New York (Niagara County)
Golden Hill State Park sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Niagara County, offering 510 acres of waterfront landscape that feels worlds away from the tourist bustle of nearby Niagara Falls. Established in 1962, the park occupies a stretch of shoreline where dense hardwood forest meets rocky beach, creating one of western New York’s quieter lakeside retreats.
The park’s centerpiece is the thirty-foot Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse, built in 1875 from hand-cut stone and still standing watch over Lake Ontario’s waters. Visitors can explore the lighthouse grounds and learn about the maritime history that shaped this stretch of coastline. The surrounding bluffs provide panoramic views across the lake, particularly striking during sunset when the water catches the last light.
Trails wind through mature forest and along the shoreline, suitable for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing depending on the season. Fishing is popular here — Lake Ontario delivers smallmouth bass, trout, and salmon — and the park provides boat launch access for anglers heading offshore. Birdwatchers will find the lakefront migration corridor productive during spring and fall.
The campground offers sites for tents and RVs, with some spots positioned close enough to the lake to fall asleep to the sound of waves on stone.
Visit between late May and early October for the warmest conditions, though autumn brings exceptional foliage along the bluffs. Winter visitors will find a landscape transformed — quiet, snow-covered, and open for exploration on snowshoes or skis.
