Goddard Memorial State Park

Stretching across 490 acres along the western shore of Greenwich Bay, Goddard Memorial State Park is one of Rhode Island’s most beloved green spaces. The park occupies a former estate, and that heritage shows — towering stands of exotic trees planted over a century ago line its carriage paths, giving the grounds a stately, almost arboretum-like character uncommon in New England state parks.

The park’s crown jewel is its sandy beach on Greenwich Bay, a sheltered stretch of Narragansett Bay where the water stays calmer and warmer than the open ocean. A large bathhouse serves beachgoers in summer, and the beach is lifeguard-staffed during peak season. Beyond the shore, nine holes of golf wind through the mature tree canopy, and an extensive network of bridle trails and walking paths loops through hardwood forest and open fields. Equestrian use is actively welcomed here — a rarity among Rhode Island parks.

A performing arts center on the grounds hosts concerts and community events throughout the warmer months, adding a cultural dimension that sets Goddard apart from purely recreational parks. Picnic areas with shelters accommodate large groups, making it a go-to for family reunions and company outings.

Visit from late May through September for beach access and the fullest event calendar. Spring and fall reward walkers with fewer crowds and spectacular foliage along the carriage roads. Winter brings quiet cross-country skiing when snow cooperates.

Camping is not offered at the park, but nearby facilities in southern Rhode Island provide options for overnight visitors.
