Colt State Park
Rhode Island (Bristol County)
Colt State Park stretches across 464 acres along the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay in Bristol, Rhode Island, earning its reputation as the “Gem of the Rhode Island State Park System.” The park occupies the former estate of industrialist Samuel Pomeroy Colt, and that legacy shows — sweeping manicured lawns, stone walls, and mature shade trees give the grounds an elegance you won’t find in typical state parks.
The shoreline is the main draw. More than three miles of Narragansett Bay frontage offer unobstructed water views, and the park’s location on Bristol’s western edge means spectacular sunsets over the bay. Cyclists and walkers share a paved bike path that connects to the larger East Bay Bike Path, a 14.5-mile trail running from Providence to Bristol. Fishing is productive along the rocky shoreline, particularly for striped bass and bluefish during warmer months.
The park features open playing fields, picnic areas with stone grills, and a boat ramp for kayakers and small watercraft looking to explore the bay. Birders will find the Chapel and Colt groves productive — the mix of coastal habitat and old-growth trees attracts warblers during spring migration and shorebirds year-round.
Camping is not available at Colt State Park, so plan accordingly if you need overnight accommodations in the Bristol area.
Visit between May and October for the best weather. Late June through September brings warm bay breezes and peak conditions for water activities. Fall foliage against the bay backdrop makes October visits particularly rewarding.
